Just last week, Disney released an updated schedule of the movies its releasing over the next eight years. That includes a look at the future of the Star Wars franchise, which is going to take a bit of a break following the release of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker this December. (Good call, by the way; I need a rest.) But after a two-year respite, we’ll be getting new Star Wars movies in 2022, 2024, and 2026.

This morning, Disney CEO Bob Iger held a Q&A session at the 6th Annual MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit in New York, and Attractions Magazine live-tweeted the whole thing. Iger touched on a number of topics, but so far as Star Wars goes, these were the big takeaways:

We’ve known for a while that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would be making a trilogy of Star Wars movies after Thrones was finished. If the next Star Wars movie comes out in 2022, and they’re behind it, it looks like that trilogy will kick off pretty soon.

Now, this isn’t set in stone. For one thing, it’s a little hard to reconcile Iger talking about Disney taking a hiatus to “figure out what’s next” when there’s a Star Wars movie scheduled for 2022. These are expensive, complicated movies that take a good long while to conceive, write, produce, shoot, edit and market. A two-year break following Episode IX is nice, but it still doesn’t leave much time for Disney to go back to the drawing board, if indeed that’s what Iger means.

So maybe the 2022 release date will get bumped back. Another possibility is that Benioff and Weiss’ trilogy is farther along than it seems. We don’t know much about it, but the most interesting rumor (and that’s all it is, just to be clear) is that the new movies will be set during the height of the Old Republic, thousands of years before the movies we know.

Then there’s the question of Rian Johnson. The Last Jedi director was also due to direct a trilogy of Star Wars movies, but we haven’t heard about that for a while. Maybe his will debut in 2024? Or are all three Star Wars movies on the schedule going to be from Benioff and Weiss? Will Disney be making any more standalone Star Wars films along the lines of Rogue One and Solo? Questions abound!

So there’s a lot we don’t know, but the wheels are turning.
