Study: If Netflix lost these key shows, half the users would cancel their subscriptions

Netflix doesn’t tell us much about its viewership numbers, however, we assume a lot of people are watching.

But for how long? With Disney getting ready to pull all of its content so it can feature it exclusively on Disney+ later this year, and CW shows potentially no longer going straight to Netflix, Netflix is no longer the one-stop content shop it used to be. And what if it lost some of its most easily watchable shows, like The Office and Friends. A study conducted by The Hollywood Reporter and Morning Consult shows just how much those two shows mean to subscribers — the younger ones, anyway.

About 2,201 adults were polled, and the results were interesting, to say the least. According to the study, about 49% of Netflix subscribers between the age of 18 and 29 would cancel their subscription if The Office and Friends are ever taken off the streaming service, along with Disney and Marvel content. And again, it’s definitely losing Disney and Marvel content before too long.

The Office and Friends are the types of shows we can watch over and over again. I mean, how often are you bored, unsure of what to watch, and realize you can’t go wrong with rewatching either of these shows? I know I’m certainly guilty of that, and I say that proudly. It’s no surprise that losing them would be deal-breakers for people.

However, this particular study dug a bit deeper. Here’s how much of Netflix’s install base would cancel their subscriptions (in these particular scenarios):

  • Losing The Office plus all Disney and Marvel content: 31%
  • Losing Friends plus all Disney and Marvel content: 30%
  • Losing all Disney and Marvel content: 28%

Of course, even if the worst happens and Netflix loses half its install base, half of a really huge number is still a really huge number…although it would certainly help to have specifics.

In any case, what would make you cancel your Netflix subscription? Assuming you have one–which you probably do.
