We don’t know a lot about the new Batman movie, The Batman, currently in the works at Warner Bros. We know it’s being helmed by director Matt Reeves (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, War for the Planet of the Apes), and that Ben Affleck won’t be anywhere near it, the actor having backed down from plans to star in and direct the movie due to deep unhappiness with what he and his bat career have become.

As to his replacement, there’s been a lot of talk about Twilight star Robert Pattinson taking up the cape, but nothing’s settled. The rumor mill continues to churn. Case in point: according to The Hollywood Reporters’ Heat Wave newsletter, the villains the Caped Crusader will fight in The Batman are none other than Catwoman and the Penguin, Batman’s age-old animal-themed nemeses.

That’s all well and good — both of those characters have long, colorful histories — but it’s a little curious that this is the same team of villains who faced down Batman in Tim Burton’s deeply weird Batman Returns all the way back in 1992. We’re guessing Reeves will tone down the fetish gear aspect but you never know.

But this is all up in the air at the moment because Reeves is still writing the screenplay. A lot may change between now and June 25, 2021, when The Batman is currently scheduled for release.

Reeves has described The Batman as a kind of detective film-noir, saying “It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films.” And nothing says grounded realism like people pretending to be various animals. Bring it on!
