Sophie Turner: Sansa “never wanted that Iron Throne”
At a recent press junket for the newest X-Men movie, Dark Phoenix, Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner — along with her X-Men co-star Jessica Chastain — sat down with Entertainment Tonight to talk about their new film. But of course, the conversation veered into Thrones territory, because how could it not?
In the series finale of Game of Thrones, rulership of the Seven Six Kingdoms went to Bran Stark, with Sansa ruling the independent kingdom of the North. ET asked Turner if Sansa had any desire to rule Westeros. “Since she got to King’s Landing in season one, she never wanted that Iron Throne,” Turner replied. “She never wanted to rule over that many people…I think, watching how this character finished on Game of Thrones was the most satisfying ending.”
She’s not wrong. Sansa wanted the North to be a free and independent Kingdom separate from the other Kingdoms of Westeros. She also ended up the Queen in the North when Jon Snow aka Aegon Targaryen was banished to the Night’s Watch for killing his aunt/lover Daenerys.
Chastain was quick to jump in with support. “I agree with that, Queen of the North. That’s better… There’s no Iron Throne anymore, first of all… But yeah, absolutely, I’d said that to her. I said it was my favorite, her and Arya, are my favorite arcs of the series.”
Turner was fully in agreement. “I love the way that Sansa’s journey ended,” she said. “I think it was kind of the one thing that she wanted throughout the whole show…to be home and to be where she felt most safe and comfortable and that’s Winterfell. She’s totally capable of leading those people.”
For what’s it’s worth, we totally agree. All hail Queen Sansa, the Queen in the North!

Oh, and Dark Phoenix hits theaters on June 7. Turner plays the lead role of Jean Grey and Chastain plays a villain who’s a combination of a couple of comic book characters.
