Stranger Things season 3 will feature Fat Hopper, more of Steve and Dustin’s bromance

When Stranger Things season 3 drops on Netflix on July 4, fans can expect to see more of Steve (Joe Keery) and Dustin’s (Gaten Matarazzo) unlikely but ever-so-enjoyable bromance. “You definitely see more of that,” Matarazzo told Entertainment Weekly. “That’s what I really like about [showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer]: They know what fans like and they roll with it.”

The show’s previous two seasons dropped around Halloween, which fit well with a show about the sleepy midwestern town of Hawkins, Indiana being invaded by horrific beings from the Upside Down sideways dimension. But season 3 premieres in the summer. Matt Duffer says there’s a reason for that:

"We wanted to explore the theme of change. The season takes place during the last summer before high school. The kids are growing up, and that transition is going to be messy and awkward and painful. Are they able to grow up without growing apart?"

Puberty won’t be the only problem the gang will be facing this season, as there’s still the big bad just waiting to cross over from the Upside Down into Hawkins. “Eleven closed the Gate, but the Mind Flayer is still alive in the Upside Down,” Matt Duffer said. “It will find another way into Hawkins…It’s just a matter of time.”

The Mind Flayer, if you’ll recall, is a malevolent being who spent a good part of the show’s second season taking control of the body of young Will Byers (Noah Schnapp). It is bad news.

And what of Sheriff Hopper (David Harbour)? How will he deal with Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and Eleven’s (Millie Bobby Brown) relationship now that he’s playing the part of Eleven’s dad? “It thrusts him into a discussion with Joyce [Winona Ryder],” said Harbour. “She’s able to offer me some advice on how to deal with being a single parent and how to, like, you know, stop being so damn controlling.”

"This season, Hopper does a lot of really big, like, action-y things. But he’s fatter than you’ve ever seen him and less capable of hurting people, but a little more capable because he’s just like a big elephant."

So, a fatter more fatherly Hopper. Okay, I think I can get behind that.
