Sansa’s coronation look

Sansa is another character whose long and difficult journey is given greater meaning during the series finale. Game of Thrones spent plenty of time grooming Sansa to be a leader, and she finally takes on that role in “The Iron Throne” by becoming the Queen in the North — the newly independent North, thanks to her.

And Sansa’s coronation look is one of the most interesting pieces in the series finale, as everything from her gown to her hairstyle seems to have some deeper meaning. To start, the design of Sansa’s gown alludes to some of Sansa’s major influences, starting with the northern influences of the direwolf and the weirwood trees.

The weirwood trees are probably the most prominent part of Sansa’s dress, with leaves going up the sleeves and the bodice being made up of growing branches. Not only does the weirwood tree represent the values of the northerners Sansa’s been chosen to lead, but the growing branches signify her growth in getting to this point. As for the direwolf sigil, Sansa’s cape is shaped like the wolf head that represents her house. This is fitting since Sansa is a Stark through and through.

Sansa’s hairstyle during her coronation is also worth noting. As Vox points out, Sansa has spent the majority of the series mimicking the hairstyle of whoever has the greatest influence on her at the time. In earlier seasons, the older Stark sister can be seen sporting similar looks to Cersei and Margaery Tyrell. When Sansa is pretending to be Littlefinger’s niece, her hair resembles his darker shade. And even in season 8, Sansa shows off a few braided looks that speak to Dany’s typical hairstyles. But during her coronation, Sansa’s hair is down and simple — revealing that she no longer needs to copy anyone else’s leadership style. The Queen in the North can do this completely on her own, and her hairstyle confirms it.
