Gwendoline Christie posts pic of her last day on set, says goodbye to Game of Thrones

Gwendoline Christie took to social media following the series finale of Game of Thrones to bid farewell to a show that has forever changed her life, and our own. Like many cast members, Christie struggled to put into words just how special the show has been for her.

"THANK YOU. There is no other way to start this. @gameofthrones has changed my life beyond anything I could have comprehended. Playing Brienne of Tarth has redefined the way I look at the world, women and particularly myself. I have never felt so exposed by a character, but happy knowing that those feelings of discomfort were about shaking off convention and embracing strength and authenticity…I shall miss everyone that gave so much of themselves helping to create ‘Game of Thrones’; it was a privilege to work with such talented creatives, cast and crew. I am just so very grateful for this phenomenal opportunity and the incredible support that you’ve all given me, all your kind words and cheer – it truly means a great deal to have been part of something so many of us have loved. My heart aches with how much I will miss Ser Brienne of Tarth. But what she has inspired I will take with me. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. ⚔️🖤"

That’s a picture of Christie on her very last day on set, hugging her friend Ciaran, an assistant director. For Christie, playing Brienne of Tarth wasn’t just a job; it was a means to get herself out of her comfort zone and to play a character who represented something bigger than herself. For me personally, Brienne of Tarth was a character who inspired and uplifted me with her courage and badassery.

Side note: If you haven’t watched HBO’s documentary about the final season of Game of Thrones, I highly recommend you do because you meet many hard-working crew members like Ciaran. It’s very touching and beautiful to see just how passionate the people behind the scenes were about the show!

And if you’re really looking for a throwback, here’s a picture of Daniel Portman (Podrick), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) and Gwendoline Christie on set during filming for season 8. Her caption, “days gone by,” has me in my feels. Game of Thrones has been off the air for a week and I’m already feeling nostalgic.
