Writing on the first season of Showtime’s Kingkiller Chronicle show is done

With Game of Thrones over, every network is aiming to have the next big fantasy smash hit. Among them is Showtime, which is adapting (sorta) Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller Chronicle series, about a red-headed genius/musician/magician named Kvothe on a books-long quest to find out who killed his parents and to bring them to justice.

Only the Showtime show won’t be about any of that. Apparently it’s set before the first book in the series, The Name of the Wind, and may follow members of the Edema Ruh, the tribe of nomadic musicians Kvothe is born into. In any case, the first draft of the first season has now been written. We know because showrunner John Rogers said so on Twitter:

So there you have it. John Rogers and his team have finished writing season 1, and now Rogers is tracking out the emotional arcs of the season longhand. What kind of pen is he using? A Pilot Metropolitan with Uniball Signo black-infused red BLX for accents. How do we know? Because he also told us that. He’s a talker, this one.

Rothfuss has a uniquely lyrical style of writing, so hopefully Rogers is taking his time to make sure he captures it just right. Music plays a big part in the story, so Showtime has hired Hamilton writer Lin-Manuel Miranda to pen the music. If this show is done well, it could be something worth watching.

For a possible preview, check out Ethan Becker’s animated rendering of a scene from The Name of the Wind, which comes recommended from Rothfuss himself.

And I say “possible preview,” because again, the show will not adapt the story of The Kingkiller Chronicle. Probably. It’s still kind of unclear. So far as I can tell, the show is a prequel and the books will be adapted as a series of movies. Hopefully we’ll get more details soon.
