HBO’s newest miniseries, Chernobyl, has checked off every box a great docudrama should. The show’s production department captures not only the essence of 80-era Soviet Ukraine, but recreates it down to the most minute details. The cast members expertly convey complex motivations and emotionally charged reactions worthy of the stakes presented by this disaster, thanks in no small part to some excellent direction by Johan Renck. And last but certainly not least, writer/creator Craig Mazin’s specific, stifling, and sober script cuts away at myths and misconception to get to the reality of what happened on April 26th,1986, and beyond.

Chernobyl is a great miniseries. Let’s go point by point and explore why.
