Avengers: Endgame falls just short of becoming history’s highest-grossing movie

Avengers: Endgame hit theaters back in April, and after an explosive opening weekend where it raked in over $1 billion, fans have wondered if it might and finally push Avatar off its perch as the highest-grossing movie in history.

At the moment, it’s looking like the answer is no, if just barely. Avatar made $2.788 billion worldwide after it released in 2009, according to Box Office Mojo. As of this writing, Avengers: Endgame has racked up $2.743 billion, putting it within $45 million of taking the number one spot. So. damn. close. Seriously, so close.

At this point, it’s unlikely Endgame will catch up, particularly with summer movies like Toy Story 4Spider-Man: Far From Home and The Lion King all coming out in the near future and stealing what little momentum Endgame has left at the box office. However, somewhere down the line Disney could drag Endgame over the line with a rerelease. It’s worked before. Jurassic Park and Titanic, another pair of high earners, have both been rereleased (and yes, I saw them both multiple times). But by the same token, now that Disney has acquired Fox and gained control of the Avatar franchise, it may want to release that film ahead of its upcoming sequels. Basically, Disney has to compete with itself for the top spot.

Disney basically owns all of Hollywood now, so that’ll probably be the status quo for a while. Titanic, the third highest grossing film of all time, is also under its banner now. So is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the fourth highest grossing, and Avengers: Infinity War, which is in fifth. You see the pattern.

Of course, all this talk will mean nothing when The Angry Birds Movie 2 sweeps into theaters in August and easily takes the crown, but it’s a fun race while it lasts.
