Netflix to launch new show billed as “Japan’s real-life Game of Thrones”

Game of Thrones is over, but its legacy continues in one way or another through various means. Case in point: Netflix is busy in production with a show that is being touted as Japan’s real-life version of Game of Thrones. No, the show won’t actually be connected to Thrones in any way but its story sounds oddly familiar.

Deadline was the first to report this intriguing bit of news about a docu-drama titled, Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan. The title itself is so epic that I don’t think I need any more information; consider me on board. Anyway, the show will focus on feudal Japan and the kingdoms within that fought for their version of the Iron Throne. Cool, right?

In Age of Samurai, the story will hone in on a warrior named Date Masamune, who was known as “the One-Eyed Dragon” because wait for it, he poked his own eye out when he became ill with smallpox. Yup, this series is definitely going to be epic.

"As a child he infamously plucked out his own eye when it became infected with smallpox, murdered his younger brother to ensure his line of succession, succeeded his father when he was 17 and soon after conquered neighboring clans to unite most of northern Japan under his control."

Deadline also mentions that Masamune’s helmet is rumored to be the inspiration behind Darth Vader’s now-iconic helmet in Star Wars. Seriously though, I’m not sure I can take much more hype, Netflix.

Unfortunately, Netflix has yet to announce an official release date for Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan, but the show is currently being filmed in the U.S., Japan, and Canada. Stay tuned.
