Hot off the news that Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin was collaborating with FromSoftware on a new RPG titled Elden Ring, Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida has made it known he would also like to collaborate with the man responsible for Game of Thrones; but with a caveat.

When asked what potential properties he might want to work on, Yoshida (a Tyrion Lannister fan) told Variety he’d love to work with Martin, but not just now. “The series ended on HBO, but we want the books to conclude,” he said. Now here’s a man with his head in the right place. Yoshida added that he hopes Martin would “Just finish writing the books!”

If there’s one hole in the Game of Thrones merchandising empire, it’s the lack of a proper video game. Sure we had that fairly excellent Telltale Games series, but with that studio filing for bankruptcy, there is nothing on the immediate horizon. On the other hand, anything that keeps Martin from finishing his A Song of Ice and Fire series — for which any video game would likely use as a foundation — is a huge negative.

To be fair, Martin’s level of involvement Elden Ring remains unknown, only that the author would have a hand in the worldbuilding or the in-game mythology of the title. It’d be nice to see him spending that energy helping a Game of Thrones RPG type title get off the ground, but maybe he just wants a break from Westeros after all these years. Who knows?
