Game of Thrones prequel is filming on the coast of Italy
By Corey Smith
Filming is underway on the pilot for HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series, which currently has the working title of Bloodmoon. At the moment, cameras are rolling at the Marble Arch Caves in Northern Ireland, as well as at Titanic Studios, long the filming hub on Game of Thrones.
But like the original show, Bloodmoon is also filming elsewhere in the world. According to local outlet Il Messaggero, that includes a shoot near the Italian town of Gaeta, specifically at the Grotta del Turco:
The Grotta del Turco is a “crack” in the rock near the sea, and is quite stunning. Per Il Messaggero, the production has requested extensive access to the site for a “series of shots” inside the Grotta.
At the moment, the team in Northern Ireland is shooting inside a cave system. They’ve also built a cave on the lot at Titanic Studios. Is the shoot at the Grotta part of that? Just how much of the pilot will involve caves?
But there are other possibilities for the Grotta. Game of Thrones never filmed in Italy, so this is uncharted territory. If someone were to put a dragon to my head, I’d guess this was a stand in for somewhere around Casterly Rock, perhaps before the Lannister stronghold was built. Casterly Rock sits on a rocky outcropping of land. The Grotta del Turco could stand in for the coastline.
But really, this could be anywhere. Westeros could look vastly different thousands of years in the past.
