Outlander: Why Jamie and Claire missed their grandson’s birth in season 4
By Ariba Bhuvad
Between the reunion, Brianna’s pregnancy, and everything else, the fourth season of Outlander ended up being one of the most emotional yet. It was riveting, but I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t gotten flustered at least once during each episode.
Season 4 was a tough one for the character of Brianna (Sophie Skelton), Claire and Jaime’s daughter. Towards the end, she gave birth to a son, Jeremiah. The father’s identity isn’t 100% certain, as Brianna was a victim of rape earlier in the season. And that happened on the same night she consummated her marriage with Roger. I told you it was flustering.
Anyway, Jeremiah’s birth is a big part of the Drums of Autumn, the fourth book in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novel series and the book on which the fourth season is based. However, there was one major element from the book missing from the show: Jamie and Claire weren’t there. On the show, their big reunion only happens after the fact.

Skelton and executive producer Matthew B. Roberts spoke to Entertainment Weekly about this change. “It kind of resonates today with a lot of modern women,” Skelton said. “There are single moms, or maybe their parents aren’t around because they passed away. For someone of Bree’s age, I think it shows such strength of her character that she’s sort of surrounded by, not strangers, but people she doesn’t really know.
"For Bree to do that alone is, I think, pretty great. It shows how far she’s come from the beginning of the season in terms of growing up, becoming a woman. It also then gives her that moment, just her and Jemmy, when she feels she might not be able to accept him. Then that sort of motherly love comes out of her and she realizes that she can accept this baby no matter who the father is."
That muffled bang is the sound of Sophie Skelton dropping the mic.
