Ray Winstone joins cast of Black Widow movie totally isn’t being made
By Corey Smith
For a movie that is not getting made, the as-yet-untitled Black Widow solo project sure is attracting a lot of talent. Officially, Marvel president Kevin Feige has yet to confirm that the Scarlett Johansson-headlined standalone film is even happening, but Variety is reporting that in addition to Johansson, Stranger Things’ David Harbour and Midsommar’s Florence Pugh, Ray Winstone has now joined the film. Most excellent.
Winstone, perhaps best known for his role as Jack Nicholson’s henchman Mr. French in 2006’s The Departed, has an extensive resume, including excellent turns in Beowulf and Edge of Darkness. The guy oozes menace, so while we don’t know what role he’ll play in the not-actually-happening Black Widow film, you can bet Winstone wasn’t hired to be comic relief.
Caution: SPOILERS for Avengers: Endgame follow below.

Plot details on the non-existent film are scarce, but given the finality of Natasha/Black Widow’s death in Endgame, a prequel seems the most likely route. The movies have touched on Natasha’s training as a Soviet spy, and the brutal past she shared with Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). A standalone movie could explore any of that without bringing time travel or alternate dimensions into it. Or the film could also be set sometime during the five-year period between Infinity War and Endgame.
Or maybe there will be time travel; you never know with these movies.
Currently not filming in London, the Black Widow project isn’t being helmed by Australian director Cate Shortland with a script from Jac Schaeffer, who is also working on the Scarlett Witch/Vision series for Disney+. No release date is confirmed, but look for it to not drop into theaters in 2020.
