Spider-Man: Far From Home almost featured Sam Wilson as Captain America…but it doesn’t

The Marvel Cinematic Universe keeps secrets before its films are released. From deaths to introductions to cameos, spoilers and leaks can only reveal so much. So it’s a nice day when we can definitively confirm something about Spider-Man: Far From Home before its July 2 release.

Granted, we’re not revealing the appearance of a character, but the absence of one. Comicbook.com (via CBR) has confirmed that Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson — the new Captain America after the events of Avengers: Endgame — isn’t in the movie at all. As it comes from the lips of Eric Carroll, who works at Marvel Studios, that’s good enough for us.

Here’s what he had to say about Spider-Man’s lack of an all-American ally in Europe:

"We briefly talked about bringing in Falcon as Captain America at the end, like maybe once Peter’s arced, and he’s sort of like leading the team, like maybe he calls in a favor. But we also thought it was really important to the arc of this movie that there not be other Avengers available to Nick Fury or Peter, so he’d have to step up and do it himself."

The pronouns are a little confusing here, but we think the first “he” is for Sam, and the second is for Peter; in other words, Sam would be leading the team, and Peter’s the one who asks for a favor. Which would be a logical place for Sam to be in. He helps lead the resurrected Avengers in Endgame, and he steps up in other ways before that to support his fellow veterans. It would only make sense for him to step up as a leader of the Avengers as well.

And what would Peter call in a favor for? Guessing based on the comics, it’d probably be to help square off against Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) towards the end of the film, or to otherwise step in and help protect New York while Peter continues his European vacation. Of course, this is all just speculation now.

However, based on both this quote and the following from Feige, it seems like the surprises won’t be about other characters:

"It’s all about Peter stepping up. And Peter getting out of the shadow, not just of Tony but of the Avengers in general. Because by the way, he’s Spider-Man. He doesn’t need to be in the shadow of the Avengers."

Peter has proven himself worthy of being part of the Avengers, though, and worthy of calling in favors like the one he won’t be asking of Sam Wilson in Far From Home. Maybe if there really is a multiverse, there’s a version where Mackie and Tom Holland get to share the screen in this movie. All the same, after having to share a film with Iron Man the last time around, Spider-Man getting a real solo outing (even if he does make friends with Mysterio) seems worth it.
