No, Guardians 3 won’t be called Asguardians of the Galaxy

With director James Gunn back at the helm, the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie is officially happening. And following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel fans knew exactly what it should be called: Asguardians of the Galaxy. After all, Thor joins the team after defeating Thanos and hands the rulership of Asgard over to Valkyrie. There’s even a comic of that name already in existence. And who doesn’t love a little wordplay? It’s perfect.

The title quickly became so popular online that fans started assuming it was the movie’s actual name. Even Chris Hemsworth got in on it. “Asgardians Of The Galaxy. That’s actually great,” he told CinemaBlend. “You might’ve just got me my next job. Thank you, man.”

Of course, not everyone was happy with the idea. Some Marvel fans were concerned that the title would sideline the other members of the team, a sentiment Star Lord would surely share. But fear not: Gunn recently assuaged those concerns on his Instagram Stories, per Uproxx:

It looks like numerous fans approached Gunn on social media about the title. Over a cascade of their concerns, he wrote simply, “Don’t worry.”

Asguardians of the Galaxy is a clever title, but it makes sense that Gunn wouldn’t want to use it. For one, Thor hadn’t actually joined up with Star Lord and the rest of the gang when Gunn initially began planning for the film, and then the whole fired-and-rehired saga happened. It’s possible his vision original vision for the movie didn’t take Thor into account.

Honestly, it’s unclear if Thor will even appear in the third Guardians movie. While Hemsworth definitely seems like he would be on board if asked, some fans have speculated that the third installment will take place prior to the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. If that’s the case, we’ll get to see Gamora again — but Thor will probably be absent from the festivities.

Guardians 3 is scheduled to begin filming next year, so fans wishing to see Thor join the franchise can keep their fingers crossed until more details about the plot are released. But sadly, they’ll need to give up on the hope of seeing Asguardians of the Galaxy on a movie poster.
