See the official logo for HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel, “Bloodmoon”

For a while now, we’ve been wondering about the official title for HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series, which is currently filming in Northern Ireland and elsewhere. George R.R. Martin, who advised showrunner Jane Goldman about the show, took to calling it The Long Night, since it takes place thousands of years before the original series and chronicles what happens the first time the White Walkers invaded Westeros. But that was never official. More recently, we heard that it was called Bloodmoon, but we didn’t know if that was an internal code name or what.

It’s probably not a codename. Reliable fansite Watchers on the Wall got a hold of the logo design for the show. Take a look:

There it is: Blood Moon, with the second ‘O’ in ‘Blood’ slashes through with dark lines, a mirror reflection of the first ‘O’ in ‘Moon’ below, with a spear separating the two words. You figure that if HBO is going to the trouble of making a logo for the show, it’s more than just a codename.

Anyway, does this mean that the show is actually Blood Moon, and not Bloodmoon? What does the spear signify? Surely not the Martell clan, since this show will take place many generations before they were around. How does the official logo compare to this fanmade one?

I also like that the show is made by “Endless Winter Productions,” because of course it is. That also plays into the setting. The first time the White Walkers invaded Westeros was no picnic for anybody, as Old Nan recounts to Bran in A Game of Thrones:

"Thousands and thousands of years ago, a winter fell that was cold and hard and endless beyond all memory of man. There came a night that lasted a generation, and kings shivered and died in their castles even as the swineherds in their hovels. Women smothered their children rather than see them starve, and cried, and felt their tears freeze on their cheeks…In that darkness, the Others came for the first time,” she said as her needles went click click click. “They were cold things, dead things, that hated iron and fire and the touch of the sun, and every creature with hot blood in its veins. They swept over holdfasts and cities and kingdoms, felled heroes and armies by the score, riding their pale dead horses and leading hosts of the slain. All the swords of men could not stay their advance, and even maidens and suckling babes found no pity in them. They hunted the maids through frozen forests, and fed their dead servants on the flesh of human children."

So it should be a fun time. For FYI, Game of Thrones was made in part by “Fire & Blood Productions.” I’m not saying that the name of the production companies are destiny, but it’s something.
