After more than 40 years in the Star Wars franchise, Mark Hamill finally got to play someone besides Luke Skywalker. Sure, it was only for one scene, and you can’t see his face, but it still counts.

Pay close attention to the Canto Bight scene next time you watch The Last Jedi, and keep an ear (and eye) out for the being who mistakes BB-8 for a slot machine. That’s Dobbu Scay, played by Mark Hamill. He both voiced the character and did motion capture work.

He confirmed it himself on Twitter over the weekend:

Unfortunately, he did not provide pictures of himself in the mo-cap suit, but the image of acting opposite a giant medicine ball is vivid enough. Where’s our Last Jedi re-release with this kind of footage in the special features? Where, we ask?

Less funny was were the three words he used to describe Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker:

“My final episode.” Is this the last we’ll see of Luke Skywalker? There are more Star Wars movies in the pipeline — from Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss — but it’s looking more and more like they won’t take place in the Skywalker era. Of course, that doesn’t mean Lucasfilm and Disney couldn’t continue the Skywalker saga again somewhere down the line. It’s happened before.

And even if we don’t see Luke onscreen, it doesn’t mean Hamill can’t work in the Star Wars universe. He did motion capture for a gambling alien and we only found out it now, after all. He could also do voice work, which is a specialty of his. Who’s to say he couldn’t record lines for Luke where he’s whispering in Rey’s ear from beyond the grave, just like his mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi did to back in the original movie?

There’s potential for a lot more fun here. Maybe he could play a droid this time around, or just voice someone random in a crowd scene? Give us all the secret Easter eggs, J.J. Abrams. We promise not to get mad about them.

Well, probably.

Next. Star Wars fans are stealing stuff from Galaxy’s Edge and selling it on eBay. dark
