Doctor Who rumor: 2019 special incoming?
Following New Year’s Day special Resolution, we might be getting one more Doctor Who special this year! But when?
Doctor Who’s 2019 gap year has sent it into of a state of nothingness in terms of new visual content, with only the animated Macra Terror to pass the time. News has been sparse too, with the only official information being that Series 12 will air in “early 2020” and will feature the return of the Judoon. But, will there be more content before 2020? It seems there might be.
According to sources available to the Radio Times, plans are in the works to air a special before Series 12 hits screens. Could this just be the rumored return of the Christmas special or another episode entirely? Of course it would be brilliant if, before Series 12, we got two new stories. But, I’m going to be pessimistic and assume we’ll only get the one.
Next year will see the long-awaited return of the Judoon. But what can we look forward to before then?

A Christmas special or a better option?
On the assumption only one new episode will air before Series 12, I hope it’s not a Christmas special. Sure, the Christmas special has become somewhat traditional, being a seasonal feature for just over a decade now. I say, however, what use is tradition if something can be improved upon?

In my view the Christmas special has become somewhat stale – particularly when they feel they’re in a creative bind to shoehorn in festive elements into a story. The results of which haven’t been overly successful in recent years for me. A case of diminishing returns making the outing seem like a shallow gimmick.
I believe what would give Doctor Who a shot of excitement would be a Halloween special – it’s the perfect fit. A dark autumnal special in the vein of Waters of Mars would be particularly creepy and compliment the seasonal mood. It would give Thirteen and the rest of Team TARDIS some serious threat to deal with too – something largely lacking thus far.
