Rumor: A Harry Potter prequel TV series on the horizon?
With multiple Universal theme parks, a Broadway show, a new series of films, and four new ebooks headed our way, the Harry Potter franchise is alive and well, even if the original series of books and films came to a close years ago. And rumor has it that the Wizarding World might be expanding once more, this time in the form of a television series.
According to We Got This Covered, an anonymous source revealed that Warner Bros. is in the beginning stages of developing a Harry Potter television series, something that would be perfect for its upcoming streaming service. If there’s any way WarnerMedia can compete with the likes of Netflix and Disney+, it’s by releasing new Wizarding World content.
The new show will purportedly be a prequel to the original series, and it will take place primarily at Hogwarts. That’s all we know about the plot so far — so really, the story can be from any time period in Wizarding World history. A prequel surrounding the Marauders or the Hogwarts founders could provide an interesting take on some of the much-loved characters and storylines from J.K. Rowling’s world, but We Got This Covered believes the series will encompass a new cast of characters entirely.
It’s difficult to imagine a Harry Potter spin-off that doesn’t tie in to Harry’s journey somehow. Even Newt Scamander’s adventures in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them connects in some way to the original series, including by having characters who appear in both.

Nothing is confirmed yet, and it’s likely to be a while before any definitive announcements about the show are made. And with the next Fantastic Beasts installment pushed to 2021, it looks like Harry Potter fans will be doing quite a lot of waiting over the next few years. We’ll be keeping an eye out as more details emerge. As Mad Eye Moody likes to say, “constant vigilance!”
