Doctor Who: The War Master: Rage of the Time Lords is out today!
By James Aggas
Today, the Eighth Doctor faces his greatest enemy in Rage of the Time Lords, the latest box set in the Doctor Who spin-off series The War Master!
I’ve been looking forward to Rage of the Time Lords since the trailer was revealed at the end of The War Master: The Master of Callous. The third box set of The War Master – a Doctor Who spin-off focusing on Derek Jacobi’s incarnation of the Master first seen in Utopia – is out now.
For this release, Big Finish have given us something very special. Because this time, an old enemy will be facing the Master once more. An enemy who’s always beaten him. It’s time for the Master to be reunited with the Doctor. But, in his very own series, will this be one time when the Master wins?
A matter of memory?
This reunion of course raises some interesting questions. When the Tenth Doctor met Professor Yana in Utopia, he didn’t recognize him in the slightest. Not until Yana had opened the fob watch he was carrying, the watch that continued his true personality.
So if the Doctor had fought this incarnation in the Time War, how come he didn’t recognize him centuries later in Utopia? Could it simply be amnesia? It wouldn’t be the first time that the Doctor has sufferred from it, after all. Especially his Eighth incarnation, as played by Paul McGann, who features in this box set. Still, I’m hoping that the answer is a little more interesting than that.
More from Winter is Coming
- For All Mankind finally gives us information in Episode 405, “Goldilocks”
- Watch a stunning VFX breakdown of The Wheel of Time season 2
- Of course Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) thinks Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen) should rule Westeros
- Confirmed: The Last of Us season 2 will air in 2025
- Final season of Star Trek: Discovery will have “a lot of action, a lot of adventure, a lot of fun”
And if that wasn’t curious enough, this won’t be the first time that this particular Doctor and Master have met, chronologically speaking. In October, we’ll be hearing an earlier meeting between the two – as well as three other Masters, including Michelle Gomez’s iconic Missy – in Day of the Master, the finale to Eighth Doctor series Ravenous. That will surely be an exciting listen, as well.
But for now, with two great actors like Jacobi and McGann featuring, Rage of the Time Lords will definitely be an exciting listen in its own right. Expect a review from us very soon.
The War Master: Rage of the Time Lords is available on CD and download from Big Finish’s website.
