Star Wars rumor: Lucasfilm eyeing Emily Blunt to play Mara Jade?

Star Wars fans have been hurt before when it comes to the return of Mara Jade, Luke Skywalker’s wife in the since-decommissioned Star Wars Expanded Universe, to the main canon. Now, We Got This Covered reports that it might be happening, for realsies this time. According to their sources, Lucasfilm even has an actor in mind: Emily Blunt.

WGTC warns that this is in “very, very early stages,” but that’s enough for us.

Mara is one tough woman, a former right-hand woman to Emperor Palpatine turned Jedi (and she permitted Luke Skywalker, known dramatic man, to marry her). Between her work in movies like Edge of Tomorrow and A Quiet Place, blunt has proven she can show some steel, although we’re not sure if she’d make a good redhead just yet. We’re open to the possibility.

So if she were folded back into the main canon, where would Mara appear?

To start, it won’t be as Luke Skywalker’s wife; we’ll likely see the last of him in Episode IXThe Last of Skywalker later this year. It could be a Disney+ show, or even a movie, which seems like it’s option #1. Depending on what eras are explored by either Rian Johnson or David Benioff and D.B. Weiss in their upcoming trilogies, she could be retooled and fit into a new era, although that’s just speculation on our part. Rey has proven that women can play leading roles in Star Wars movies that still make oodles of cash, after all. It’d be foolish not to consider Mara if she fits the story that these filmmakers — or other creators — want to tell.

Much as Lucasfilm did with another Timothy Zahn-created character, Grand Admiral Thrawn, WGTC reports that the studio is open to shifting some details of Mara’s story around to make sure she fits into the new universe. With Thrawn making a successful appearance in Star Wars Rebels and getting three new books of his own as well as a limited series of comics, it’s high time for a character like Mara to step back into the spotlight. Should Zahn be interested, why not even let him write new stories about her?
