Death and the Queen has been announced as the next Doctor Who story starring David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor to be released on vinyl, exclusive to HMV!

Big Finish are continuing to have success with the vinyl format, as they’ve announced another Doctor Who story that’s getting the vinyl treatment.

This time, it’s the Tenth Doctor story Death and the Queen. Due for release in the UK on September 6th 2019, the vinyl will be limited to 1,250 numbered copies, and will be an exclusive to HMV.

Released back in 2016, both as an individual story and as part of the box set The Tenth Doctor Adventures: Volume One, Death and the Queen is set in the middle of Series Four, while the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble are still enjoying their many travels together. But when Donna meets a mysterious stranger and gets engaged (again), are those travels coming to an end?

"Donna Noble has never been lucky in love. So when, one day, her prince does come, she is thrilled to have the wedding of all weddings to look forward to. Though the Doctor isn’t holding his breath for an invitation. And her future mother-in-law is certainly not amused. But on the big day itself, Donna finds her castle under siege from the darkest of forces, marching at the head of a skeleton army. When it looks like even the Doctor can’t save the day, what will Queen Donna do to save her people from Death itself?"

The Death and the Queen vinyl will be an exclusive to HMV, and limited to just 1,250 copies.

Death and the Queen

More from Winter is Coming

Death and the Queen is a rather unusual little story by James Goss. It’s kind of his take on a rather regular trope in Doctor Who that’s used as an exit story for companions. The companion meets someone, falls in love and arranges to marry them – all within the space of one story!

What’s great about Death and the Queen is that we know that Donna won’t be leaving the Doctor for good. But the story still explores how the Doctor feels about it.

Tennant’s performance is, unsurprisingly, a real highlight. It’s not just what he says that’s important about Donna leaving, but about what he doesn’t say, too. About what he does to avoid the heartbreak of another companion leaving. On the surface, he appears to be OK with the idea, but there’s clearly more to it underneath.

Another key highlight is, of course, Catherine Tate as Donna. She’s given a lot to do in this one, both in terms of plot and emotionally, too. We hear how she copes with not just being a queen, but with the idea of marriage – particularly when it might be to the wrong man. She’s also given a major part when it comes to saving the day, and Death and the Queen reminds us exactly why Donna was so brilliant. In fact, it’s a rather strong (if slightly odd) story overall.

You can discover why for yourself on September 6th, when the story is released on vinyl. Or you can discover right now by downloading the story from Big Finish’s website, or getting it as part of The Tenth Doctor Adventures: Volume One.
