This is the coolest Stranger Things Easter Egg yet, we promise

Netflix’s Stranger Things is a show packed with delightful Easter eggs. From vague ’80s references to the heartbreaking story of Eleven wearing Hopper’s daughter’s blue hair tie on her wrist, the series seemingly goes out of its to way hide clever hints in plain sight. However, this little Easter egg goes a step further, incorporating real-world detective work from the folks over on the Stranger Things subreddit. Warning: Possible SPOILERS for season 3 below.

Let’s set the scene: Halfway through season 3, Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) and Chief Hopper (David Harbour) show up at the house of Murray Bauman (Brett Gelman) searching for answers. Bauman, you might remember, is the show’s resident conspiracy theorist, so when Joyce reveals Bauman’s phone number (618-625-8313) to an agent of the Russians, Bauman is none too pleased. Joyce gleefully recites the whole number, leading clever fans to dial the number. What they discovered was Bauman’s answering machine with the following message:

"Hi! You have reached the residence of Murray Bauman. Mom, if this is you, please hang up and call me between the hours of 5 and 6 PM as previously discussed. Okay?! If this is Joyce, Joyce, thank you for calling, I have been trying to reach ya. I have an update. It’s about, well, its probably best if we speak in person. It’s not good or bad, but it’s something. If this is anyone but my mother or Joyce, well…  you think you’re real clever, getting my number, don’t ya? Well, here’s some breaking news for you. You’re not clever. You’re not special. You are just simply one of the many, many nimwits to have called here, and the closest you will ever get to me is this prerecorded message. So, at the beep, do me a favor and hang up, and never call here again. You are a parasite. Thank you and good day!"

Ah, that Murray Bauman, he’s such a nice fellow.

Having called the number, I can confirm it is, in fact, Gellman on the line. And, at the risk of revealing my old age, the ’80s music in the background was a nice touch. Also a nice touch? The 618 area code covers southern Illinois, the location of Bauman’s residence. At any rate, we love the lengths Netflix went to, to promote the show. Bring on season 4!

Seriously though, get on it Netflix, those kids are going to have gray hair soon.
