Game of Thrones snags nine Saturn Awards nominations
Happy awards nomination season! Yes, after the Emmys stole everyone’s attention earlier today, you might have missed that the Saturn Awards also dropped its nominations yesterday, and since it’s meant for the world of genre in all its many forms, Game of Thrones snagged some nominations there, too.
The Saturn Awards has released the full list in an exceptionally fancy PDF, but let’s look at where Game of Thrones has made inroads in terms of getting nominations.
First up, it’s naturally one of the nominees for Best Fantasy Television Series, alongside American Gods, Charmed, The Good Place, The Good Witch, The Magicians, Outlander and The Outpost. Surprisingly, Game of Thrones usually hasn’t won this award, but Outlander has, and there’s no real sign that that’s going to stop.
In the lead acting categories, Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke are nominated. Notably, these aren’t separated out by genre. Harington is up against Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead), Jeffrey Wright (Westworld), Bill Pullman (The Sinner), Sam Heughan (Outlander), Grant Gustin (The Flash), and Seth MacFarlane (The Orville). Clarke, meanwhile, has Adrienne Palicki (The Orville), Catriona Balfe (Outlander), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Jodie Whittaker (Doctor Who) and Candice Patton (The Flash) as her fellow nominees. Much like the Emmys, these aren’t categories that Game of Thrones usually competes in, and these are both pretty stacked — especially in the actress category.

In the other acting categories, Game of Thrones has a much stronger presence. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage got Supporting Actor nods, while Lena Headey, Gwendoline Christie, and Sophie Turner are in the Supporting Actress categories. However, the Saturn Awards have another unique quirk — there are special categories for younger actors. This is where Maisie Williams comes in, not in the regular Supporting Actress category as she does with the Emmys.
Over on the film side of things, Avengers: Endgame has a ton of nominations, with Shazam!, Us, Aladdin, and Captain Marvel among the other movies scoring multiple noms.
These awards will be streamed on September 13, which is Friday the 13th, which means everything will go smoothly.
