The Witcher: First pic of Geralt riding Roach, his trusty horse

Netflix is ready to pull the curtain back on The Witcher, its adaptation of author Andrzej Sapkowski’s series of popular fantasy novels, which were spun off into an even more popular series of video games. The odds that we’ll get a trailer at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend are quite high. The banner is already up:

For now, the cast and members are dropping more behind-the-scenes looks at the show, including our first at lead character Geralt of Rivia’s (Henry Cavill) trusty steed Roach:

As showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich‏ writes on Twitter, “Everyone needs a best friend.” She also wrote this: “Squint and you’ll see something else in this picture. Go ahead. Look hard.” See anything? Looks like Geralt and Roach to me.

There’s a variant image floating around out there, too. It’s Geralt on a horse…from another angle!

Roach probably will end up being the biggest star from the show — people always get attached to the animals.

In addition to whatever horse is playing Roach, The Witcher will also star Freya Allan as Ciri, Geralt’s protege, and Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, his on-again, off-again sorceress love interest. “The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family,” reads the official press release. “Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.”

The Witcher will be out this year. We’ll learn more at Comic-Con!
