How many Emmys can Game of Thrones actually win for its final season?

Technical categories: Makeup, hairstyling, costuming, and music

This is part two of the technical extravaganza, and there are again a lot of awards to get to. Not all of them are sure bets, though. Let’s dive in.

Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes

Again, we’re looking at “The Bells” here, which seems like a weird choice when you have outfits like Sansa’s coronation gown from “The Iron Throne” just sitting there. It’s an even weirder choice when Good Omens put forward “Hard Times,” which hops through different time periods, dressing up David Tennant’s demon Crowley and Michael Sheen angel Aziraphale with all sorts of different period gear and makes it all work. Good Omens seems like a better shot here.

Outstanding Hairstyling

This is a category where Game of Thrones is often nominated but doesn’t win, so Pose, GLOW, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel are all good choices here. Let’s go with Pose, shall we?

Outstanding Makeup (Non-Prosthetic)

In the non-prosthetic category of makeup, Game of Thrones has been really hit or miss. Sometimes it wins, sometimes it doesn’t, but it has a strong nominee in “The Long Night” for all the dirt that everyone got smudged with. Again, though, Pose could sneak away with the win for its fantastic work in capturing and evoking a very specific look and era.

Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup

This is another category where Game of Thrones is up against Chernobyl, but it is one where Game of Thrones has won the last two times it has been nominated. Still, Chernobyl managed to make radiation damage look as absolutely horrifying as it is, and it’s possible it might get rewarded for that over Game of Thrones. Flip a coin, says this writer.

Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media within a Scripted Program

Game of Thrones has been nominated for this before, although it hasn’t won before. With the VR add-in though, it could boost itself past The Good Place‘s Interactive Fan Experience and Bandersnatch‘s House of Tomorrow.

Outstanding Main Title Design

Game of Thrones finally updated its main titles for its final season, and they were mind-blowing. It won when it was first nominated, and it should walk away with this one.

Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score)

Barry, The Handmaid’s Tale, House of Cards, and This is Us are all in on this one too, which means that two Emmys darlings — Barry and Game of Thrones — are up against each other. Game of Thrones, though, won last year, so it’s possible it could win again. We’ll give it to Game of Thrones here.

Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special (Original Dramatic Score)

This is technically for The Last Watch documentary, not the show itself, so make of that what you will. Also, Hannah Peel, not Ramin Djawadi, composed the music. We could see the Academy not letting Game of Thrones sweep this, though. Look at Our Planet or Love, Gilda as alternatives.
