Watch the new trailer for HBO’s His Dark Materials show!
Just a couple of months ago, HBO released a teaser trailer for His Dark Materials, its adaptation of author Philip Pullman’s beloved sci-fi/fantasy/armored polar bear trilogy. Now, an all-new trailer is here, straight from the show’s panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
Watch and be amazed:
Here’s a long and very detailed synopsis from the BBC:
"Dafne Keen takes on the lead role of Lyra, the young protagonist of the story who lives in Jordan College, Oxford. Placed there at the request of her Uncle, Lord Asriel (James McAvoy), she lives a sheltered life amongst the scholars and college staff while under the watchful protection of The Master (Clarke Peters) and Librarian Scholar Charles (Ian Gelder). When the glamorous and mesmeric Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson) enters Lyra’s life she embarks upon a dangerous journey of discovery from Oxford to London. Here she meets Father MacPhail (Will Keen), Lord Boreal (Ariyon Bakare) and journalist Adele Starminster (Georgina Campbell) at a glittering society party where she first hears about the sinister General Oblation Board.Lyra is subsequently thrown into the nomadic world of the boat-dwelling Gyptians – Ma Costa (Anne-Marie Duff), Farder Coram (James Cosmo), John Faa (Lucian Msamati), Raymond Van Geritt (Mat Fraser), Jack Verhoeven (Geoff Bell) and Benjamin de Ruyter (Simon Manyonda) who take her North in her quest.Once in the North, she meets charismatic aeronaut and adventurer Lee Scoresby (Lin-Manuel Miranda) who joins them on their epic journey and who becomes one of Lyra’s closest allies."
And that’s just Book 1, people. Speaking on the show’s panel at Comic-Con, writer Jack Thorne — the guy who brought Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to the stage — said he wrote 43 drafts of the pilot before he and showrunner Jane Tranter were satisfied. Hopefully the work shows.
Earlier this morning, BBC One released four new official images from the show, which is already renewed for a second season, by the way.
Here’s lead character Lyra, played by Dafne Keen (Logan), and her dæmon Pantalaimon:
In Lyra’s world, everybody has a dæmon; it’s like a little familiar that’s tied to your soul. The merchandising opportunities are many.
Next up: Iorek Byrnison, the armored bear who befriends Lyra after she helps him retrieve his armor:
This show has talking battle bears. You’re intrigued, aren’t you?
And here’s Clarke Peters (The Wire) as Dr. Carne, the Master of Jordan College where Lyra lives.
And here we have Stelmaria, Lord Asriel’s (James McAvoy) dæmon. Lord Asriel is Lyra’s father, but he doesn’t necessarily have her best interests at heart.
The show also stars Ruth Wilson (The Affair) as the conniving, complicated Mrs. Coulter and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Texan aeronaut Lee Scoresby, which is interesting casting but we’ll see. “I literally come into this singing a duet with my daemon,” said the Hamilton writer during the panel. “On a hot air balloon.” Fine, we’re interested.
Amir Wilson plays Will, a key character from the second book, but we’re not free if we’ll see him in season 1.

Three former Game of Thrones stars are part of the cast. Ian Gelder (Kevan Lannister) plays Librarian Scholar Charles, James Cosmo (Lord Commander Jeor Mormont) will play Farder Coram, and Lucian Msamati (Salladhor Saan) portrays John Faa. As you can see, it’s quite the ensemble.
