At long last, the battle appears to be over. After weeks of uncertainty, Avengers: Endgame has officially passed Avatar as the biggest box office success of all time. If you need proof, look no further than this official message from Avatar director James Cameron, sent out from the official Avatar Twitter account:
If it’s been a minute since you’ve seen Avatar, you might have forgotten that the Navi phrase “oel ngati kameie” means more than its literal English translation of, “I see you.” It’s how the Navi greet each other, and has spiritual and interpersonal significance. It’s cute that Cameron used it here.
Anyways, Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo were quick to respond:
Everyone’s being very complimentary and respectful. Where’s my Russos-Cameron feud?

Kidding aside, Endgame was able to pass Avatar this past Saturday, July 20, with a total box office haul of $2.7892 billion (and counting). That’s against Avatar’s total of $2.7897 billion. Of course, Cameron might end up reclaiming the title with a slew of Avatar sequels on the way, but either way, it’s Disney who will have the last laugh, as the House of Mouse now owns both properties.
