Game of Thrones opening credits contained big clue for series finale

One thing I constantly looked forward to with each new episode of Game of Thrones was watching the opening credits, something that isn’t always true of TV shows. The music, the way the camera swept over the map of Westeros…it’s among the best opening credits sequences in history:

And if you were paying close attention, usually the credits were different episode to episode. Subtle little changes reminded viewers what had already happened, and in some cases gave them a glimpse of what was to come.

The credits were redone for the final season; the blue tiles representing the army of the dead was a very cool addition. And it turns out fans are still finding hidden easter eggs in the credits. For example, ever look closely at Cersei’s map room when the camera flies over the Red Keep? Redditor farrukhsshah did, and found something interesting:

"[Spoilers] The crack that appeared on the map of Westeros during the Battle of King’s Landing foreshadowed the eventual split between the North and South Kingdoms from gameofthrones"

On the left-hand side, you’ll notice the crack in the map as shown in the opening credits. On the right-hand side, you’ll see an aerial shot of the map from after the Battle of King’s Landing. Again, it’s cracked.

In the opening credits depiction of the map room, the crack runs east to west across Westeros across the Neck, cutting the North off from the rest of the kingdoms. That’s indicative of what happens in the series finale, when King Bran grants Sansa’s request for the North to once again be an independent kingdom, which she rules as the Queen in the North.

And that crack was visible in the credits before the series finale, so that’s some nice foreshadowing. Either that, or the crack just represented the division between the North and the rest of the continent that had persisted for seasons. Either way, it’s fun to mull over, and cool that fans are still finding new nuggets within the show months after it’s over.
