The Walking Dead: The idea of a Negan movie has “been discussed”

The universe of The Walking Dead is expanding. There’s already one spinoff shambling across our TV screens — Fear the Walking Dead — with another one on the way. Lead actor Andrew Lincoln left the show a while back, but there are movies about his character in the pipeline. Ratings for the show aren’t what they once were, but AMC is still going ahead with lots of new content.

Soon enough, that might include a movie (or movies, who knows?) about Negan, the brutal warlord-turned-reformed freedom fighter played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. With Lincoln off the show and mainstay Danai Gurira (Michonne) on the way out after the upcoming season 10, Morgan’s Negan will be one of the most prominent characters left on the show. It makes sense that AMC may want to double down on him.

“I know that it’s been discussed,” Morgan told ComicBook.com at San Diego Comic-Con when asked about the possibility of a Negan movie. “We gotta do it before I get any older, I mean, pretty soon I’m not gonna be able to be the young Negan anymore.”

It’s interesting that Morgan would zero in on the idea of a movie about a younger Negan. The character does have an extensive comic backstory, and author Robert Kirkman has expressed interest in getting on screen.

However, there’s also a much older version of Negan at play in the comics, which just wrapped up after over 15 years in print. A spinoff movie could feature that version of the character instead.

But ultimately, nothing is solid yet. I’m sure there are some fans out there who would rather the series just chill out entirely, but that doesn’t appear to be in the cards.
