Doctor Who: Greatest Show in the Galaxy prequel by story’s original writer out next year!
By James Aggas
In 2020, a follow-up to the classic Doctor Who story The Greatest Show in the Galaxy will be released by Big Finish – written by the original story’s writer, Stephen Wyatt!
Earlier this year, Big Finish released three stories that focused on Mags, a werewolf from the planet Vulpine that was originally introduced in the TV serial The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. We took a look at that serial, and found it to be a highly creative and colorful story, and perhaps one of the more underrated stories of the Seventh Doctor’s era on television.
If you love that story as much as we do, then you’ll likely be excited by this news. In February 2020, Big Finish will release a story that will act as both a sequel and a prequel to the original TV story, as the origins of The Psychic Circus are explored. More than that: the story will be written by Stephen Wyatt himself – the man who wrote The Greatest Show in the Galaxy! This will be his first script for Big Finish, so this is quite a coup for the company.
Along with a returning writer, we’ll also be having returning actors, too. Not only is Chris Jury reprising his old role of Kingpin from the original story, but Ian Reddington will also be back as the terrifying Chief Clown.
The Psychic Circus will explore the origins of the circus first seen in The Greatest Show in the Galaxy.

An old enemy returns

But it’s not just characters from the original TV story that are returning for this one. The description for the story has revealed a few key details – including the name of a very old enemy…
"When a junkmail robot invades the TARDIS, the Doctor gets led down an unnervingly familiar path.Meanwhile, space beatniks Kingpin and Juniper Berry just want to hitch rides and busk – until a greater purpose calls. The Doctor’s past and Kingpin’s future are entangled by malevolent forces. The Psychic Circus is just beginning: it may lack clowns, but it already has a Master…"
That’s right – the Master is back! But it’s a rather unusual incarnation that the Seventh Doctor will be facing, as James Dreyfus returns to play the First Master. So far, we’ve only heard him play this incarnation once, in 2017’s The First Doctor Adventures: Volume One. It’s interesting that Big Finish are having this Master meet the Doctor out of order. Is there a reason for this? What is his connection to the Psychic Circus? I look forward to finding out.
The Psychic Circus will be out on CD and download in February next year from Big Finish.
