Based on the glossy trailer dropped at San Diego Comic-Con, Carnival Row — a new show coming to Amazon — is a breathtaking, ambitious, steampunk-esque drama. Starring Orlando Bloom, Cara Delevingne and Game of Thrones alumnus Indira Varma (Ellaria Sand), the show is set in a fantasy version of neo-Victorian Britain, complete with zeppelins. Check out the trailers to get a better idea of what that means:

Carnival Row chronicles a time of conflict between fairytale creatures and the humans who have destroyed their natural habitats. Throw in some neo-noir detective elements and a love story between human protagonist Rycroft Philostrate (Bloom) and the flying faery Vignette Stonemoss (Delevingne), and you’ve got the ingredients for a really dark but fun show.

Fandom attended the Carnival Row panel at SDCC and learned a number of things about this intriguing new show. It’s awash in Irish mythology, including the mysterious land of Tir na nOg, a Celtic version of the Otherworld where the Fae live. A war with humanity has displaced the mythological population, and they’ve ended up as refugees in England.

Philostrate, a veteran of the war against the Fae, is now a detective investigating a string of unsolved murders. Philostrate and Stonemoss are former lovers (during the war), but in the aftermath their relationship has become strained.

Executive producer Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim), has been developing the show since his college days. He and writer Marc Guggenheim (Arrow) shopped it around five years ago and Amazon finally bit on his “irresponsible” pitch. They also ponied up a sizable budget, as you can see from the trailers. The show’s make-up effects and creature designer is Nick Dudman (Harry Potter series, Batman), with the final creations being a blend of CGI and practical effects.
