With the Marvel Cinematic Universe poised to add the Fantastic Four in the near future, fans have already begun dream-casting the major roles. (Hey, if the MCU can pull in Angelina Jolie for The Eternals, the sky’s the limit, right?) So how do you cast Doctor Victor Von Doom, the iconic villain of the piece? If you’re fan artist Mizuri, you go for Game of Thrones alum Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
The thing is, Coster-Waldau could play the role even if Marvel casts younger actors to play the Fantastic Four. Rumor has it that the current plan is to have the Fantastic Four go missing from the timeline before most of the major events of the story so far, then re-emerge in the present without having actually aged due to spending time in the Negative Zone. Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic) discovers the existence of the Negative Zone in the comics, so we can picture a scenario where he drags in the rest of the family — Johnny and Sue Storm (the Human Torch and the Invisible Woman) and Ben Grimm (the Thing) — along with him.
However, there’s no mention of what happens to Victor Von Doom in this story, meaning he may not have followed them into the Zone and instead aged regularly, probably taking over the country of Latveria in the process, as he is wont to do. That would explain any age disparity between Reed and Victor, since they are meant to be contemporaries.
That all being said, here’s Mizuri’s vision of Coster-Waldau as the sorcerer, scientist, and evildoer:
With the age factor out of the way, let’s talk about characterization. To put it mildly, Victor is kind of a know-it-all jerk, with little bits of vulnerability deep down and a desire to actually create a utopia in Latveria (with him as the ruler, naturally). Doctor Doom isn’t exactly like Jaime Lannister, but the two characters share confidence and some slightly good bits buried deep down.

However, there’s one issue here. Victor is Romani, and Coster-Waldau is not. The MCU is currently trying to expand in terms of representation, so Coster-Waldau might not fit in with that. There aren’t many well-known Romani actors, but it would be nice for Marvel to look for someone new or not as well-known.
On the other hand, this art is really cool.
Get on it, Kevin Feige (and casting directors). We believe in you.
