Doctor Who: Two Short Trips announced for the Eleventh Doctor
By James Aggas
Two stories in the Doctor Who range of Short Trips have been announced for next year, both of which to feature the Eleventh Doctor, as he meets his old companion Jo Jones…as well as his immediate successor, the Twelfth Doctor!
Unsurprisingly, Big Finish haven’t given us many stories featuring the Eleventh Doctor so far. With the unavailability of Matt Smith, we’ve only had a few narrated stories across several of Big Finish’s Doctor Who ranges, and that isn’t likely to change anytime soon.
However, in the meantime, we do have two more exciting stories to look forward to in the Short Trips range featuring his Doctor. These short narrated stories are simple, but very effective, and are often a very enjoyable way to spend half an hour or so.
The first we can look forward to is The Infinite Today by Sharon Bidwell and narrated by Katy Manning. Released in January next year, The Infinite Today will reunite Jo Jones with the Eleventh Doctor. This isn’t the first story to feature such a pairing, as both of them featured in The Sarah Jane Adventures, specifically in the two-part story Death of the Doctor.
Producer Alfie Shaw gives us an idea of what we can expect from the story.
"Sharon Bidwell has produced a wonderful story, a really sinister variation on the Groundhog Day repeating day narrative and Katy [Manning] is on her usual brilliant form performing it. It’s a strong opener in a year full of exciting new Short Trips for the Doctor and friends!"
Eleven meets Twelve
It won’t be the only story to feature the Eleventh Doctor in 2020. Regeneration Impossible, written by Alfie Shaw and narrated by Jacob Dudman, will feature the Eleventh Doctor meeting the Twelfth!
Jacob Dudman is absolutely brilliant when it comes to his impression of the Eleventh Doctor, so the more stories featuring his excellent narration, the better. This looks like a different kind of multi-Doctor story, one set during the Twelfth Doctor’s final moments. From the brief clip already released for the story, it sounds like it’ll explore the Eleventh Doctor’s reaction to finding out that he has a future, so it’ll be interesting to explore that particular angle.
More from Winter is Coming
- For All Mankind finally gives us information in Episode 405, “Goldilocks”
- Watch a stunning VFX breakdown of The Wheel of Time season 2
- Of course Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) thinks Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen) should rule Westeros
- Confirmed: The Last of Us season 2 will air in 2025
- Final season of Star Trek: Discovery will have “a lot of action, a lot of adventure, a lot of fun”
From what Shaw describes of the story, it sounds…complicated.
"The Eleventh Doctor is locked in with the Twelfth Doctor, an impossible dead body and calls from the Twelfth Doctor – but not the same one who is locked in with the Eleventh – and he wants them both dead."
This definitely sounds like quite the intriguing release. I can hardly wait. In the meantime, I hope we also get another volume of The Eleventh Doctor Chronicles with Jacob Dudman on narrating duties again. Like I said, his performance as Matt Smith’s Doctor is extremely impressive, and definitely deserves to be heard more.
