The Expanse renewed for season 5, Outlander season 5 coming in 2020

The Expanse, SyFy’s beloved but under-watched sci-fi epic, was saved from cancellation after its third season by Amazon, with a new, fourth season right around the corner. Come December, we’ll learn about the next leg of the journey for everyone aboard the Rocinante, as well as the various other schemers and and players spread throughout the galaxy.

Obviously we haven’t seen the new episodes yet, but Amazon has, and they must have been pretty impressive because the retail giant has already ordered a fifth season, according to Deadline.

Amazon is shoring up its genre offerings in a big way. In addition to The Expanse, which comes with a following built right in, it’s also readying shows based on The Lord of the RingsThe Wheel of Time, and The Dark Tower. You gotta have at least one spaceship thing in there, right?

We can watch The Expanse season 4 on December 13. So that’s something to look forward to. Unfortunately, another fan favorite genre show isn’t coming as soon we we’d like. Starz chief operating officer Jeffrey A. Hirsch announced on the Television Critics Association summer press tour that Outlander, the popular show about time-traveling romance, won’t returning for its fifth season until early 2020. “Everything we do is based on delivery, trying to have something on the air to serve that premium female audience,” he said. “We have some shows coming before like Power that serve the general market. It’s more about scheduling around that digital experience.”

In other words, pushing the new episodes of Outlander to next year doesn’t have anything to do with the content; it’s just a scheduling decision.

Outlander season 5 is based on The Fiery Cross, the fifth novel in Diana Gabaldon’s series, and will pick up in colonial America where Claire and Jaime Fraser are building a new life for themselves. You can watch it in…let’s say February.
