“That’s no moon,” Obi-Wan Kenobi famously says in Star Wars: A New Hope, as he, Luke, Han Solo and Chewbacca lay eyes upon the Empire’s planet-sized war wagon for the first time. “It’s a battle station.” Now, 42 years and a boatload of Star Wars movies later, the legacy of the original spherical behemoth appears to be coming over the event horizon once again.
The latest tidbit comes courtesy of the people at Making Star Wars, who spend a lot of time trying to uncover the storylines of the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker movie by sifting through piles of PR clues, Lucasfilm wastebaskets and anonymous leaks. One of those anonymous sources may have some info on the return of Death Star technology in the new installment.
WARNING: Potential Bantha-sized SPOILERS below.
The anonymous source reports that the Sith fleet is lurking in the dangerous and unstable “unknown regions” of the Galaxy. Per this source, Kylo Ren and his First Order company have a new weapon: Star Destroyers armed with planet-destroying weapons comparable to the original Death Star itself.
Frankly, the Death Star technology hasn’t proven much of a winner for either the Galactic Empire or the First Order, but you gotta give it to the evil guys in black and red: they don’t give up on their doomsday cannons very easily. The latest firepower would give the Sith Fleet a whomper of a gut punch capacity, to say the least.
In the first trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, we see Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) peering at the distant ruin of the second Death Star felled by the Rebel Alliance in Return of the Jedi (1983). It’s a haunting image, and the leak suggests that the legacy of the Death Star may soon rise again from the ashes.
