A Star Trek: Discovery virtual reality experience is coming
By Corey Smith
Set your phasers to stun: there’s a new virtual reality experience based on Star Trek: Discovery beaming down to select cities. Produced by Sandbox VR, Star Trek: Discovery: Away Mission will initially available at Sandbox VR locations Hong Kong, San Francisco and Los Angeles, before coming to New York, Austin (hooray), San Diego and Chicago.
So what exactly might be in store for lucky Trekkies in those cities? Watch the teaser below!
Phasers, tricorders and a holodeck? Beam me up.
Speaking to Variety, Sandbox President and chief product officer Siqi Chen explained that the initial idea for the experience focused on the holodeck aspect of the show. “We wanted to make a 0.1 version of the holodeck.” As Sandbox VR’s creative director and head of experience Michael Hampden added, “It’s probably a lifelong dream come true for ‘Star Trek’ fans.” No argument there. Who never wanted their own holodeck?
Discovery actress Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), will guide players through the experience, which will be much more than just a shoot em up adventure. Teams of up to six players will use their wits, reflexes and more to solve the mystery of a missing spaceship on a remote ice moon. Hampden said that the goal was “to recreate the ‘Star Trek’ experience,” which has always involved more than just shooting everything in sight (unless J.J. Abrams is involved).

Set for a fall release, the VR experience will last nearly 30 minutes (assuming you and your crew don’t die beforehand). It’s just one of many Star Trek experiences of interest warping to a quadrant near you in the not-to-distant future:
