Stranger Things: Steve and Robin were originally going to get together
By Ariba Bhuvad
If you’re like me, you were likely shipping Steve and Robin when you watched the third season of Stranger Things a few weeks back. Maya Hawke brought a sass and intelligence to the character of Robin that matched perfectly with Steve’s aloofness. When he came around to appreciating her vibrancy and wit, I figured they were destined to make the perfect couple.
And apparently, creators Matt and Ross Duffer and producer Shawn Levy did initially plan to get these two cuties together. Speaking to Variety, Hawke (who’s the daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, FYI) said that she and the brothers eventually made the decision to make Robin a lesbian.
If you’ve seen the third season, then you’ll remember the moment when Robin and Steve are sitting on the bathroom floor in the Starcourt Mall and Robin reveals that she didn’t have a crush on Steve in high school as he’d thought, but rather on a girl who only had eyes for Steve. It was a different kind of plot twist than we’re used to on Stranger Things, or even on TV in general, but a welcome one. Said Hawke:
"It was kind of a collaborative conversation, and I’m really really happy with the way that it went. […] Sometimes we can have empathy for people on screen that we wouldn’t normally have empathy for in real life. If I can hope for anything it’s that maybe some people fell in love with Robin and that helped them fall in love with girls who love girls and boys who love boys."
Maya Hawke is the hero we didn’t deserve in season 3 but got anyway, and we couldn’t be happier about.
Hawke had a similar conversation with The Wall Street Journal about the decision to make Robin a lesbian, and at what point it became clear that was the direction they were going to take:
"Throughout filming, we started to feel like she and [Steve] shouldn’t get together, and that she’s gay. Even when I go back and watch earlier episodes, it just seems like the most obvious decision ever."
I’m so glad that Stranger Things brought in an LGBTQ character, and one of a kind we don’t see a lot of on TV. Together with giving Lucas’ little sister Erica (Priah Ferguson), the Stranger Things gang is finally looking a little more diverse.
