Jeri Ryan on why she returned to play Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Picard

In one of the more shocking moments of the Star Trek: Picard trailer revealed at San Diego Comic Con, fans were excited to see actor Jeri Ryan return to the role of Seven of Nine.
Originally appearing on Star Trek: Voyager, Seven was a former Borg drone who had slowly rediscovered her humanity. In a video released by CBS, Ryan explained why she returned to the role after 18 years away:
"Seven’s struggle was fun for me, and I missed sharing that with her and watching her learn how to be human again. I thought that journey was over. People asked at conventions are you going to do another one, another movie. No! We told her story. That was done. Are we going to see her on Earth becoming a housewife? I don’t want to see that. And then when I learned what they has planned for Seven in this new world, you can’t turn it down. It was too rich again, and too full of new adventures and new struggles and new discoveries."
It’s true that Voyager wrapped up Seven’s storyline rather well, and even if Picard wanted to further explore her journey, there would still need to be some plot reason for her to be involved, especially given her lack of an established relationship with Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), the lead character on the new show.
So what do the Picard writers have planned for Seven? That’s the million-credit question. We saw what appeared to be the wreck of a Borg cube in the trailer, so perhaps the Borg will factor heavily into the new show. That makes sense given Picard’s extensive history with them.
Either way, Seven was hardly the only returning character we saw. We also saw an android played by Brent Spiner, although it’s unclear if it was Data, B-4 or someone else. And speaking to the Trekkie Girls at SDCC, Voyager veteran Robert Picardo — who played Voyager’s Emergency Medical Hologram, the Doctor, as well as Starfleet scientist Louis Zimmerman, who created the Hologram — said CBS had approached his agent about him appearing in season 2.
