How Natalie Portman is preparing for her role in Thor: Love and Thunder

With a great hammer comes great responsibility, and Natalie Portman is taking her casting as the Mighty Thor seriously leading up to the release of Thor: Love and Thunder. Most Marvel fans were content just knowing that Taika Waititi would be returning to direct the fourth Thor installment, but the fandom was even more thrilled when Portman announced her unexpected return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

And Portman is greeting Jane Foster’s new role in the MCU with enthusiasm — along with plenty of research. While the actress has tackled Jane’s character as a scientist and Thor’s love interest in both Thor and Thor: The Dark World, she’s never actually taken up the hammer herself — or the responsibility that accompanies being one of the MCU’s leading heroes.

Understanding that playing the Mighty Thor will be far different than anything she’s ever done before, Portman isn’t simply reading the film’s script to get into character. Instead, she’s picking up the comics that initially laid out this storyline for Jane: Jason Aaron’s Thor saga.

Portman posted an image of a stack of Aaron’s comics to her Instagram Stories with the caption “Werk @ marvel”:

It’s comforting to know that Portman is so dedicated to her role, especially with so many Marvel fans excited to see a woman front a Thor movie. Aaron’s story sees Jane wielding Mjolnir after the Odinson is judged unworthy. And since we’ve at least partially seen that play out through Thor leaving his position as king of Asgard, it seems that Thor: Love and Thunder will follow in the comics’ footsteps at least somewhat when it comes to the plot and lore.
