FanSided editorial director Josh Hill and I are on a quest, a quest to read each and every chapter of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin’s as-yet-unfinished magnum opus. Join us on our journey, and be ye enriched.

Today, we tackled Arya V from A Clash of Kings, aka ‘Arya Continues To See Stuff A Child Her Age Never Should.’ And away we go:

Although Arya and friends go through it in this chapter — the description of the decayed bodies hanging on the gibbet is particularly frightening — we were most taken with the lighter moments, many of which involved Gendry. Even in the midst of brutal war, there’s still time for the two of them to strike up a friendship, and maybe more.

And really, even that gibbet of decaying bodies gets put to good use, courtesy of Hot Pie’s frighted yelp — that guy caved at the first sign of trouble. Martin is very effective of keeping Arya’s childlike perspective front and center even as she goes through things far removed from anything normal child have to go through.
