Game of Thrones showrunners sign major development deal with Netflix

And that’s a wrap, folks! The battle for where Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss will land following the end of the landmark Netflix show is over. Although Disney and Amazon put up a good fight, Netflix has emerged victorious. According to Variety, the pair have signed a “multimillion-dollar, multi-year overall deal” to write, produce and direct new shows and movies exclusively for the streaming service.

Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, released a statement to mark the occasion

"We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix. They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members."

Benioff and Weiss also put out a release:

"We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home. Over the past few months we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber. We remember the same shots from the same ‘80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them."

I have to admit, with the pair already working on a Star Wars film for Disney — which is set to hit theaters at some point in 2022 — I thought they would sign on there. And since the House of Mouse owns practically everything in the known universe, which now includes 20th Century Fox, it made sense on paper, but I guess Netflix just offered something…different?
