Here’s what Aang would have done in the never-made fourth season of Avatar: The Last Airbender

Although he may be best known these days for creating Netflix’s animated fantasy The Dragon Prince, Aaron Ehasz made a name for himself as the head writer on Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, a three-season animated epic beloved by fans to this day. (We don’t talk about the movie.)

At the moment, Netflix is readying a live-action remake of The Last Airbender, with original series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino at the helm. And remakes are fun and all, but what about more of the original series? As Ehasz revealed earlier this year, there were originally plans for a fourth season of the show, but they were scuttled when the movie came out.

Per Ehasz, the fourth season would have dealt with the rehabilitation of Azula, a nigh-psychopathic firebending prodigy and sister to the much more mild-mannered (but still very brooding) Prince Zuko. And that sounds fun, but surely it couldn’t be the only plotline he had in mind; Azula was a secondary character in the end. What about leading man Aang, the titular last airbender?

Speaking to Ehasz at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Den of Geek got him talking about his plans, starting with how he planned to deal with the fallout of Aang taking away the ability to firebend from the tyrannical Firelord Ozai. “My feeling about that was like there’s always a cost, right? There’s always some balance,” Ehasz said. “You can’t just be like I’m the Avatar, taking your powers away. It’s a great power, but part of it is you just took all this evil into you. To take it away from someone else you’re holding onto it to protect the world.”

"The story I wanted to tell with Aang was about him struggling with taking some of that inside and probably a considerable amount of anger and guilt and big feelings. By the way, guess who would be the best person to have a mini vacation with? It’s Zuko! Someone who’s processed a lot of anger on his own, right?"

According to Ehasz, Zuko would have helped Azula through her rock bottom, too. He would have been busy in this hypothetical season of television.

Another story Ehasz had in mind was about a child born who may be a new airbender. Aang would start to wonder if it was actually the reincarnation of his friend Gyatso, Aang’s mentor and friend before he accidentally got frozen in an iceberg. “That was something I wanted to do and talk about the idea of friendships lasting beyond lifetimes.”

For the record, Azula did take a stab at redemption in some graphic novels set after the end of the final season, but most of these intriguing ideas must be relegated to the scrap heap of TV history. I wonder if the live-action series will incorporate anything new.
