Andy Serkis—Gollum himself—is directing Venom 2, with input from Tom Hardy

Venom 2 was the surprise hit of 2018. Sure, it was a superhero movie, technically, but it wasn’t a Marvel movie, and the trailer looked silly in the extreme. Remember “a turd in the wind”? The internet remembers:

Nevertheless, all the naysayers were proven wrong when people lined up to see Tom Hardy wrestle with his gooey black superhero symbiote to the tune of $856.1 million worldwide. Naturally, Fox immediately got to work on a sequel. For whatever reason, Ruben Fleischer is not returning to the director’s chair, but The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Andy Serkis — who I will always remember as Gollum from the Lord of the Rings movies — will be taking his place.

“I’m right at the beginning stages,” Serkis said on the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “I’ve got some very clear ideas about the journey I’d like to see visually and how we can take the characters into another dimension.” He also said that star Tom Hardy is “very involved” with writing the script with Kelly Marcel, who co-wrote the first movie.

"I’ve known Tom for many years and always admired him hugely as an actor and producer. We’ve always wanted to work together directly. I’m deeply excited to work with Tom Hardy and to work with all the great actors who are involved in it. It’s a fantastic franchise. I’m really honored to have been asked to direct it and it feels like it’s a very contemporary story. I think it’s going to be hopefully an extraordinary piece of cinema."

And not a turd in the wind, right?

If you’re wondering where Gollum gets off directing a major Hollywood movie, Serkis is also a director, most notably of the special effects-heavy Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle. Also, remember him turning up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as minor villain Ulysses Klaue, all badass and everything?

Guy pops up in the most unexpected places.

In other Venom news, Michelle Williams revealed to Yahoo that she’ll be back to play Anne Weying, a lawyer and the fiancé of lead character Eddie Brock. The end of the first Venom movie left the door open for a couple different potential storylines. One of them involves Anne becoming She-Venom, which is what it sounds like. Another involves Woody Harrelson coming in to play serial killer Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage. Or why not just throw both at the wall?
