The costumes on Game of Thrones are justly famous, but the stars have to consider more just than how they look in Westeros. They’ve also got to step out in front of the cameras at the red carpet, which calls for a whole other kind of styling.
The Hollywood Reporter spoke with the pros who design the looks for Game of Thrones stars Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark). At first thought, I’d think you could put basically anything on either of these two and they’d radiate perfection. And while this is likely true, a lot of thought goes into creating each red carpet look.
Let’s take a look at some of them below, shall we?

The Mother of Dragons donned a simple, sheer look at the 70th Emmy Awards: a black Dior gown running up and down with colorful flowers. I, for one, am smitten. “Sometimes simplicity goes a long way,” says stylist Petra Flannery.

A lady in red, indeed. Clark is a sight for sore eyes in this red Dolce & Gabbana ensemble. I can’t seem to look away…“I really love the combination of the dress being tulle and very feminine and using the jewelry from Taffin because [they] have modern bold pieces,” said Flannery.

Fun fact: the lilac dress Emilia Clarke wore at this year’s Oscars has over 300,000 Swarovski crystals in it. Yes, 300,000. There’s so much to adore about this look, but I particularly love the perfect fit. “It was such a strong silhouette and it had a little bit of draping in just the right areas,” said designer Olivier Rousteing. “Emilia always looks beautiful in color.”

Of all the Emilia Clarke red carpet looks showcased in the THR article, the one she wore to the season 8 premiere in New York City is my absolute favorite. The dress gives off an icy vibe while Clarke’s makeup is exuding fire, with bright orange/red eyeshadow. “I knew if anyone could pull it off it would be her,” said Flannery. “It [was] a big moment, wrapping up so many episodes and years of hard work, and I wanted it to be a really special, glamorous moment.”

And now, let’s move on to the Queen in the North:
HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA – JUNE 04: Sophie Turner attends the premiere of 20th Century Fox’s “Dark Phoenix” at TCL Chinese Theatre on June 04, 2019 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images)
Turner’s red carpet looks have always been bold, unique, and different. Above at the Dark Phoenix premiere in Hollywood, she’s fierce in a Louis Vuitton outfit that encapsulates who she is through and through. Her stylist, Kate Young, describes the outfit above as, “edgy and tough, but also quite romantic.”
LONDON, ENGLAND – MAY 22: Sophie Turner attends an exclusive fan event for “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” at Picturehouse Central on May 22, 2019 in London, England. (Photo by Joe Maher/Getty Images)
Just how adorable is Sophie Turner, though?! The cropped look above with the high-waisted jeans is something that only she could pull off. There’s nothing glamorous about it but yet she manages to make it look so classy and elegant. “When you have a massive press tour it can be tedious to keep seeing gowns,” said Young. “This feels really true to Sophie’s personal style — fashion and a little edgy, but also really normal.”
BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND – APRIL 12: Sophie Turner attends the “Game of Thrones” Season 8 screening at the Waterfront Hall on April 12, 2019 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. (Photo by Charles McQuillan/Getty Images)
Sophie Turner’s look at the season 8 screening in Belfast takes my breath away. It’s a simple yet elegant Louis Vuitton gown (she really like Louis Vuitton) that screams fashionista.
Kudos to both stylists for making these women look their red carpet best. They’re absolutely killing it.
