Westworld, HBO’s show about sentient robots — or hosts — in an amusement park breaking free of the bonds placed on them by their human creators, premiered back in 2016 and immediately captured the imaginations of fans. Pretty quickly, they started theorizing. What was the nature of the shadowy Delos corporation? Were any of the human characters we met actually hosts, and did they know it? It was and is that kind of show.

In the first season, the show threw us for a loop when it revealed that mild-mannered Bernard, the head of Westworld’s programming division, was actually a host. Since then, no one’s identity can be assumed.

And now there’s a new theory bumping around. According to a “source” at That Hashtag Show, another human character may have been a host: the smarmy writer Lee Sizemore.

What evidence is there that Lee is a host, beyond an anonymous “source”? Not much, really. Sure, we never saw him leave the park, but that’s true of a lot of characters. But the number one reason I’m not on board with this idea is because of his final scene in season 2, where he sacrificed himself to buy time for Maeve and company to get away from a band of violent hosts. Lee only got to the point where he was willing to do that after some serious self-discovery, and I’m not convinced a host is capable of being that sophisticated…yet. At the least, that final scene convinced me that Lee is more human than host.

Of course, I was also fooled by Bernard way back in season 1, so who’s to say who is a host and who isn’t. Westworld is tricky like that, so if this rumor has any truth to it, we’ll find out soon enough. But for now, I’m Team “Lee is a human,” which means we probably won’t see him in season 3 at all.

Next. Westworld season 3 will be “less of a guessing game”. dark
