Redemption coming for Kylo Ren? Star Wars fans get to theorizing

facebooktwitterreddit

With The Rise of Skywalker bringing the third Star Wars trilogy to an end in just a few months, fan theories are cropping up all over the internet, suggesting how the film could play out. One theory that Kylo Ren fans have been pitching since The Force Awakens hit theaters is everyone favorite moody First Order acolyte is actually a good guy. And he may very well get a redemption arc in the upcoming film.

The latest interpretation of this theory comes from Redditor ThatSoodooGuy, who draws parallels between similar lines in The Force Awakens and A New Hope, lines that may point to a Kylo Ren redemption”

"I watched TFA last night and an exchange between Han and Leia reminded me of something. Han says something close to “its too late for him, he has too much of his grandfather in him.” This is close to the conversation between Owen and Beru when they say “you can’t keep him here forever, he has too much of his father in him.” Owen responds with “I know, that’s what I’m afraid of.”"

The conversation between Owen and Beru in A New Hope is, of course, about Luke. And given that Luke goes on to become a much better person than his father — never turning to the dark side over the course of the saga — it feels significant that the writers would draw such a clear parallel. Are they hinting that, like Luke, Kylo might not be so terrible after all?

We’ve already seen hints of Kylo’s kinder side come out with Rey, and his redemption makes sense given that the current trilogy mirrors the first in so many ways. Darth Vader turns away from the dark side during The Return of the Jedi, so it would fit with the usual formula if Kylo did the same during The Rise of Skywalker. But with The Last Jedi veering so far off course from the traditional Star Wars tropes, it’s also possible the similar lines are meant to highlight the differences between the two trilogies.

And if Kylo does manage to redeem himself, it’s unclear whether it would happen right at the end, as it did with Vader, or if there would be a reveal that he was good all along, which seems to be what ThatSoodooGuy is pushing for. From where I’m sitting, that option seems a bit too far from conventional canon, but it could make Kylo’s character more interesting.

When they aren’t trying to figure out where Kylo’s allegiances lie, Star Wars fans have been attempting to unravel the mystery of Zori Bliss, the character Kerri Russell will play in the upcoming film. While it’s confirmed that Bliss will run into the Resistance on the planet Kijimi — and she’ll almost certainly be on their side — fans have connected her to a ship that shows up in the movie’s trailer. The ship could belong to Bliss, and it looks a lot like the one we see in Rey’s flashbacks when her parents left her behind as a child.

Could Bliss have some connection to Rey’s past? We won’t know for sure until the next installment hits theaters, but the evidence certainly suggests she might have some answers about Rey’s parents.
