Doctor Who: Details for new Short Trips in 2020 revealed!

Details have been revealed by Big Finish for three new Short Trips, to be released early next year – and we can exclusively reveal the cover for one of them!

Big Finish’s Short Trips range has provided us with a lot of great Doctor Who stories over the years, with stories set across the whole history of the series. Not only has it explored eras both Classic and New, but some have even explored the Time War!

And with the format of the range mostly providing a single narrator (with the exception of the two-part Jago & Litefoot Revival in 2017), all the stories are extremely cheap, too. So they’re a nice accessible option for many fans on a budget.

Naturally, we’re extremely excited to reveal details of three stories that will be released in 2020. More than that – in a Doctor Who Watch exclusive, we can reveal the cover to one of the stories, Deleted Scenes!

Deleted Scenes

"For all that Jamie has seen and done in his travels, nothing quite prepared him for the magic of being a film star.During a Parisian holiday in 1908, he and The Doctor are taken in by film director Céline Tessier and soon find themselves immersed in the world of the silver screen. However, Jamie will discover that – in show business – where there is delight, one must also expect one’s share of tragedy."

Angus Dunican’s short story looks set to put Jamie in a rather interesting position. The Highland rebel from eighteenth century Scotland is from a period long before the era of movies, so it’ll be interesting to hear how he reacts to it, let alone take part in it!

It’s also great to know that Frazer Hines will be performing this story. Hines has been exceptionally good at not just voicing his old role of Jamie, but also doing a brilliant impersonation of Patrick Troughton’s Doctor. So this will help to add the feel of this story having a larger cast than just one person narrate the story.

Also, that cover is fantastic. Simple, but effective, and definitely leaves me intrigued as to how this story will use film within its plot.

Decline of the Ancient Mariner

"When NASA has a problem they can’t quite understand, they quickly turn to the Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith to investigate. Their Mariner 10 probe disappeared for 30 minutes, with no apparent explanation. What starts out as quick investigation ends up having catastrophic consequences for the time travellers. But the reason for the probe’s disappearance sounds a little too familiar for the Doctor."

It’s not made clear from the description which Doctor will be featuring in Rob Nisbet’s story. However, we at least know who the companion is, which is enough to draw my attention: Sarah Jane Smith.

Even in the Short Trips range, we don’t often get stories featuring the iconic companion of Sarah Jane Smith. Having said that, we will be getting a story featuring her towards the end of the month, #HarrySullivan, which I’m definitely looking forward to listening to. But there’s no question that it’s nice to know that we’ve got another story featuring Sarah Jane to be excited about.

Dead Woman Walking

"The Doctor’s meddling has taken a tremendous emotional toll on Ace over their many adventures. However, this time, it may just cost her life.Landing in the middle of a civil war, the Doctor hoped to discreetly meddle and then slip anyway unnoticed. Instead, he’s managed to infect Ace with an organic bomb. A bomb with a most unusual trigger. If Ace dies, so does the planet."

There are two key reasons why I’m excited to listen to this one. Firstly, it’s written by Roland Moore, who’s already written some really strong stories for Big Finish. (His historical story The Night Witches is especially worth checking out.)

Secondly, the first line of that description sounds like the perfect description for the Seventh Doctor’s era in general. The Seventh Doctor and Ace’s relationship has always been an interesting one. Sometimes, he almost treats her as a daughter; other times, she’s almost a pawn in his grand games. So you know immediately that this story is going to capture that difficult relationship perfectly.

All three stories sound simple but intriguing, and that’s exactly what you’re looking for in a Short Trip. These should make for enjoyable little listens when they’re released in February, March and April 2020, respectively.
